There was a time when every business
advisor was advocating that going global was now at
every managers’ finger tips with the internet
as the super highway to success. But for too many small
businesses, the website is just another expense providing
little interest for customers never mind delivering
actual business.
However,
when Joyce Gray was looking to start up in business
with her online VELUX blinds shop, K2 Marketing were
appointed to turn her business dream into a reality.
Sean explained,
“When Joyce approached us, she had little more
than a concept and the firm belief that the internet
was the perfect medium to launch the business. Our role
was not only to develop the company name, the branding
and the personality. We then had to try and capture
the way in which people buy blinds and reflect this
in the online shop.”
Countless hours
were spent analysing the competition, discussing the
concepts with the key target market in this instance
– women, and actually buying blinds.
Sean added, “If
there is one thing that we advocate in any campaign,
it is being specific about who your target market is
and then concentrating all your efforts on really understanding
what they want and what it is they value from your business.
The more accurately you can do this the more effective
your marketing will be.”
The research and
focus groups provided a clear positioning and branding
for the company which has been reflected in the corporate
identity and developed through to the website.
Joyce commented,
“When the site was launched it was everything
I had envisioned and more. Not only had K2 developed
a wonderful website they had also provided a full management
system that allows me to control the content of the
site.”
As with any online
business the key factor is driving visitors to the site
however the reliance on search engine optimisation alone
would not guarantee the level of visitors required for
the business to succeed and therefore K2 Marketing developed
an online paid for placement campaign with key search
engines.
Joyce concluded,
“The proof of the pudding is in the eating and
in the first month of the website going live we had
netted almost £10,000 worth of sales and our figures
have risen month on month since then. Now there are
not many businesses never mind online businesses that
can claim such an achievement in their first month.”
At the end of the
first month we also reviewed the site with a number
of clients to identify what they liked and disliked
and where we could improve upon. As a result a number
of changes to the site were made immediately and an
action plan was drawn up to ensure that the site continues
to perform at the highest level.
Sean added, "The
most important aspect of marketing is measurement. By
measuring what was taking place on a daily basis we
could see where clients were having problems and what
actions were required. By actually speaking to clients
and asking what they thought has allowed us to gain
invaluable advice to maximise performance and return
on our investment."
